Unlocking Imagination: The Magical Library Transformation at Penn Fields School (SEND)

When the head of English at Penn Fields School approached us with the idea of designing a wooden tree for the children to explore, little did we know it would lead to the creation of an enchanting world within their library. Our goal was to transport the children of Penn Fields School into a world of wonder and imagination right within their own library. Inspired by magical adventures, like Harry Potter and Hansel and Gretal, we embarked on a journey to bring these stories to life.

In this enchanting world, tactile animals, towering trees, and whimsical toadstools invite young minds to engage with their surroundings in a whole new way. With vibrant colours and the inclusion of beloved storybook characters, we've aimed to ignite the imagination of every child who steps into this space. It's a testament to the power of sensory-rich environments in enhancing learning and sparking the joy of discovery.

Hollow Tree Library

It's been a joy to see the children's faces light up as they step into the tree, complete with potions, wands, owls, and wizardry. At Play to Measure, we believe in the power of imagination, and this project exemplifies the magic that happens when creativity and learning come together.

We previously had an uninspiring and overcrowded library. With Play to Measure we started the design process to create an enchanted library. I’ve had the pleasure of watching the project develop over the summer holidays and witnessing the staff and students response to their new area – They were blown away! We have turned the space into a multi-use space with a library, an intervention area and sensory walls making it a place the students are keen to visit.

We have reduced the number of books in the library and will rotate them every term to keep them fresh. We’ll have clubs in there at lunchtime and weekly sensory stories hidden for the students to find.

I’m proud of what we’ve achieved and can’t wait to see the impact it will have on our students picking up a book for pleasure. Thank you Play to Measure!

Multi-Sensory Tactile Mural Walls

Celebrating the magic of storytelling and sensory exploration, our multi-sensory murals in Penn Fields School's library are a symphony of textures, colours, and beloved characters from the world of children's literature. Through a thoughtful blend of fabrics, furs, resin, beads, and the shimmering allure of mirrors, we've created an immersive experience where children can not only read about their favourite characters but also reach out and touch them.

Gingerbread House

We transformed an existing break-away space into an inviting gingerbread house. As children step through the door, they enter a space designed to foster meaningful one-on-one and small group interactions. We're excited to see how this unique environment inspires young minds and fosters a love for learning at Penn Fields School.

Toadstool Table

Our innovative approach to furniture design has given rise to a toadstool table, a centrepiece where teachers and students can come together in an immersive and creative way. But this table is more than just a place to sit. With a lift of the lid, we've unveiled hidden storage within the base, offering practicality while maintaining the magic of the space. To ensure the safety and security of this unique feature, the lid is secured with a padlock, allowing only teachers to access its contents. It's a perfect blend of functionality and imagination, embodying our commitment to providing innovative solutions for education at Penn Fields.

As the children read their books in the gingerbread house, or sat at the toadstool table, we hope it sparks their imagination and ignites their love for storytelling. Penn Fields Enchanted Forest Library is a testament to the magic that can happen when literature and art intertwine.

Keith, Sam, Glen and Lauren have created a truly magical space for our students. Thank you Play to Measure I will never understand how you can create such beautiful spaces!

Collaborating with the teachers at Penn Fields School has been an inspiring journey. When we embarked on the transformation of their library, the school was empty during the summer holidays, but the teachers’ unwavering excitement and enthusiasm fuelled our determination to create something truly extraordinary. Over time, our partnership has grown, and we’ve had the privilege of working on multiple projects together. The team at the school consistently presents us with innovative, out-of-the-box ideas that know no bounds. They dream big and have a clear vision for the development of spaces tailored to their learners’ unique needs.

Our mission is to turn these visionary ideas into reality, and our partnership with Penn Fields School has become a testament to what can be achieved when passion, creativity, and expertise align. At Play to Measure, we have a deep-rooted background in working with SEND children, and this knowledge enables us to design spaces that not only excite but also cater to the specific needs of the students.

The dedication, enthusiasm, and care displayed by the teachers and staff at Penn Fields School are a true source of inspiration for us. Together, we’re creating environments where imagination knows no limits, and every child’s potential can flourish.
